Blocked blood vessel. Light micrograph of a section through an artery showing blockage by atherosclerosis. The entire lumen of the artery has been blocked. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty deposits of atheroma form on the inner walls of arteries. This narrows them, reducing the amount of oxygenated blood that can flow through them, leading to oxygen deprivation for the tissues that the artery supplies. If this occurs in the coronary (heart) arteries, it can cause angina pectoris (chest pain) or a heart attack. If it occurs in the brain it can lead to a stroke. Magnification unknown.
