Atheroma. Light micrograph of a section through an artery showing a thick deposit of atheroma (bottom). Atheroma consists of fat, dead muscle cells, fibrous tissue, cholesterol and blood cells. The disease which causes atheroma deposits to form is called atherosclerosis. The condition causes progressive narrowing of the arteries. The deposits disrupt blood flow and may cause abnormal clots that can break off in fragments and block smaller blood vessels. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of heart disease and stroke.
