Arterial thrombosis. Light micrograph of a section through a thrombus (abnormal blood clot, orange) in an artery. Thrombosis is a condition where clotting occurs within blood vessels. Clots can reduce blood flow, or travel from where they formed and block smaller vessels. Thrombosis in key blood vessels can cause a heart attack or stroke. A major cause of thrombosis is the presence of atherosclerosis (fatty plaques on the inner lining of arteries). Treatment is with anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory drugs, or surgery.
