Caption

Retinal occlusion. Ophthalmoscope view of a retina showing damage caused by retinal blood vessel thrombosis, the blockage of a blood vessel by an abnormal blood clot (thrombus). The retina is the light sensitive membrane at the back of the eye. At centre left is the optic disc, where the blood vessels enter the eye. Blockage to the blood vessels can lead to tissue death and blindness. Abnormal blood clotting can be treated with anticoagulant drugs, but the damage to the retina is permanent.
