Embolism. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a blockage, or embolism, in a blood vessel. Embolisms, particularly when they occur in vital organs such as the lungs (pulmonary embolism), can cause severe medical problems or death. Elsewhere they can lead to pain and tissue death. The most common embolus (particle causing an embolism) is a blood clot.
