Aortic aneurysm. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a thoracic aortic aneurysm. The aorta (round, lower centre right) is the main artery of the body, it carries blood from the heart (oval, upper centre) to the body. An aneurysm is a blood- filled dilation in a blood vessel. It is caused by a weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by hardening of the artery (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure or injury. If left untreated aneurysms rupture and are often fatal. Treatment is with repair or replacement of the vessel.
