GDC coils. An aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of a blood vessel. They are dangerous because as they get bigger the wall of the blood vessel gets thinner and can tear, resulting in bleeding inside of the head. This image was obtained during endovascular treatment with GDC coils, a minimally invasive procedure where an Endovascular Neurosurgeon places a tiny catheter (red) inside the aneurysm and places many tiny platinum coils inside the aneurysm sac until it is completely filled. This keeps blood from entering and removes the risk of bleeding. The thin red structure is the tiny catheter which is navigated into the aneurysm. The large rounded structure which is reddish-yellow is the aneurysm filled with platinum coils.
