Aneurysms. Coloured angiogram (blood vessel X- ray) of aneurysms (white balls) in the left internal carotid artery (on the right here), which carries blood to the head. An aneurysm is a blood- filled dilation in a blood vessel. It is caused by a weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by high blood pressure, hardening of the vessel (atherosclerosis) or injury. If left untreated aneurysms can rupture and are often fatal. Treatment is with repair or replacement of the blood vessel. Angiograms use a radio-opaque contrast dye to highlight blood vessels.
