Atheroma. Computer artwork of fatty deposits (atheroma, left) building up on the wall of an artery. The atheroma narrows the artery making it harder for the red blood cells to move through it. It also causes the walls of the artery to harden, a condition named atherosclerosis. If the artery becomes completely blocked it can cause a heart attack if the artery is in the heart, or a stroke if it is in the brain.
