Deep vein thrombosis (raised vein at right) affecting a 58-year-old man's lower left leg. Deep vein thrombosis is the formation of blood clots in veins running deep in the body. Here the blockage has caused other veins in the leg to stand out. Treatment is with blood-thinning drugs to prevent further clotting, and monitoring in case the blood clot detaches and travels to the heart, brain or lungs, with often fatal consequences.
