Thrombus. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the inside of an artery, showing a thrombus. The thrombus (an abnormal blood clot) is the large yellow mass at upper left. The artery walls are seen surrounding the thrombus and receding into the distance at upper right. This is the internal carotid artery of the neck, with CT scanning used to allow virtual endoscopy of the blood vessel. If the thrombus blocks the blood supply to the brain, it can be fatal. Blood- thinning drugs can reduce and prevent clotting. CT scanning uses X-rays to look at structures inside the body.
