Thrombosis of leg veins. X-ray of a thrombosis of veins (white) in the leg of a patient with phlebitis (inflammation of the veins). The leg is seen from the side, with the leg bones down left and the knee at centre left. A thrombosis is the disruption of the body's blood supply by the formation of an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel. Here, the thrombus has blocked the femoral vein in the thigh, leading to a gap (upper centre). If the thrombus detaches and travels to the heart, lungs or brain, it can be fatal. Blood- thinning drugs can reduce and prevent clotting. A contrast medium has been injected into the blood to highlight the blood vessels, a technique known as angiography.
