Calcified leg veins. X-ray of subcutaneous calcifications in the lower leg of a patient with venous insufficiency. The calcified areas show up as the white patches in the tissue surrounding the bones. Venous insufficiency is a condition where the valves in the veins start to fail, and blood pools in the legs rather than draining upwards to the heart. Calcification is the deposition of calcium, and in blood vessels it can lead to complications such as thrombosis (abnormal blood clotting).
