Thrombosis of leg veins. Broken blood vessels (red) and skin discolouration (brown) in the leg of a patient with superficial venous thrombosis of the left internal saphenous vein. A thrombosis is the disruption of the body's blood supply by the formation of an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel. If the thrombus detaches and travels to the heart, lungs or brain, it can be fatal. Blood-thinning drugs can reduce and prevent clotting.
