Thrombosis of leg arteries. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of thrombosis of the leg arteries (red) in a 63-year-old man with arteritis (inflammation of the arteries). The MRI scan also shows the leg bones, soft tissues and the hands and lower arms. A thrombosis is the disruption of the body's blood supply by the formation of an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel. Here, the thrombus has caused a blockage just above the knee at left, in the final part of the right femoral artery. The blood supply to the lower leg has been maintained by the collateral arterial network, which can take over if the main blood vessels are damaged.
