Superficial phlebitis in a 66 year old man's leg one week after surgery. Phlebitis is an inflammation of a vein that causes a painful, swollen, red and hot area on the skin. It may be caused by trauma, infection, childbirth or, as in this case, surgery. Treatment is with anti- inflammatory drugs and the wearing of support bandages.
