Insomnia. Elderly woman lying awake in bed, unable to get to sleep. Insomnia is a condition in which a person is tired but cannot fall asleep. It is usually caused by anxiety, depression, or some drugs, for instance caffeine or amphetamines. Some drugs, such as valium, can be used to help promote sleep, but in the case of chronic insomnia, lifestyle changes are preferable.
