Female stress urinary incontinence. Computer artwork of a section through the pelvis of a woman with urinary incontinence. The bladder is at lower centre right. Urine is being expelled from the urethra, the tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. At centre is the uterus (womb) and at centre left is the rectum. Incontinence is an incontrollable involuntary passing of urine. It is caused by a weakening of the muscles around the bladder and urethra. This is stress incontinence, where pressure exerted on the bladder, for example from coughing or sneezing, leads to urine leaking from the urethra.
