Solar keratosis on the scalp of a 75-year-old man. Also known as an actinic keratosis or solar wart, this dry and scaly raised area of skin may develop into a squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. It will therefore be surgically removed or destroyed by cryotherapy. Solar warts are caused by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight, and so develop on exposed areas of skin such as the face or arms.
