Caption

Jaundiced eye in a case of obstructive jaundice. This is where the bile ducts of the liver become blocked and the pigment bilirubin, that is usually excreted in the bile produced by the liver, builds up in the body. It is the bilirubin that produces the yellow colour of the eye and also of the skin. Once the obstruction has cleared, recovery should occur. Surgery may be needed to clear obstructions such as bile stones, but is not suitable when the obstruction is inside the liver.
