Kidney failure. Coloured gamma scan showing kidney failure in a patient's left kidney. The kidney on the left shows abnormally low activity relative to that on the right. This image was made by a gamma camera, which detects gamma rays emitted by a radioactive isotope injected into the patient. The isotope concentrates in active parts of the kidneys, revealing whether they are functioning properly. Kidney failure is an abnormal reduction of the rate at which the kidney removes waste products from the blood.
