Cystitis. Artwork of a woman's abdomen showing an inflamed bladder (red) caused by cystitis. This occurs when bacteria enter the bladder through the urethra (black, lower centre), through which urine passes from the bladder out of the body. The inner lining of the bladder becomes inflamed, leading to a frequent urge to pass urine and pain on urination. The disease is far more common in women as their urethra is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder. In severe cases, the infection may spread to the kidneys (upper centre, one sectioned at right) through the ureters linking them to the bladder. Cystitis can be treated with antibiotics.
