Gallstones. X-ray of gallstones (centre) in a patient's gall bladder. The spine is at left. Gallstones are hard deposits of cholesterol or bile salts that may cause acute pain. Treatment, if needed, may involve ultrasound to break up the stones, surgery to remove them, or chemical means to dissolve them. The gall bladder stores the bile that the liver produces, then passes it into the digestive tract to aid fat digestion.
