The red and blue areas indicate blood flow within the kidney, indicating that the transplant has been successful. The chart at bottom shows the pulses of blood moving through the kidney as the heart pumps blood around the body. Transplantation replaces a failed or failing kidney with a donor kidney. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine. Doppler ultrasound scanning detects moving fluids, such as blood, by the frequency change they cause when reflecting high-frequency sound waves. Colour Doppler scans colour-code the moving fluid to show the direction and speed of the flow.
