Caption

Renal atheroma. Light micrograph of a section through a kidney with atheroma. Cholesterol has built up in two of the kidney's arterioles (red) causing stenosis (narrowing). This restricts the blood flow in the kidney and reduces its filtration rate. This leads to the build up of toxic substances in the blood, eventually leading to kidney failure, which can be fatal. The atheroma will not only be found in the kidney, but will also be present in other blood vessels. If it is also in the heart or brain it could cause a heart attack or stroke.
