The red scaly rash of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) affecting a person's cheek. SLE is a chronic inflammatory disease of connective tissue that affects the skin and other internal organs. The red rash is typical; progressive inflammation in the kidneys, heart lungs and brain may also occur, followed by the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis). A mild form of the disease affects only the skin. SLE is regarded as an autoimmune disease and may be diagnosed through the presence of abnormal antibodies in the bloodstream. It is treated with corticosteroids.
