Lyme disease rash. View of the thigh of a 59 year old woman showing a rash caused by Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a condition which causes symptoms similar to influenza, and also causes joint inflammation and skin changes. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which is trans- mitted by tick bittes. Symptoms tend to occur in cycles lasting around a week, and may continue for many years if they are not treated. If the disease is diagnosed before any joint inflammation occurs, antibiotic drugs quickly clear it up. Joint damage is rarely permanent, and disappears after the disease has been treated.
