Lupus erythematosus. Artwork of the inflammatory response due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). SLE is an autoimmune disorder that attacks connective tissue as if it were foreign. Sites of attack include the brain (top centre), kidneys (lower centre), heart (centre right) and joints (shoulder joint at centre left). There is no known cause of this disorder, but it is thought to be either genetic or associated with hormones. Nine times as many women as men develop the condition. Although sometimes fatal, SLE symptoms can now be relived with corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs.
