Lupus erythematosus. Artwork of autoantibodies (green) involved in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Autoantibodies are antibodies that attack the body's connective tissue as if it were foreign. Antibodies are proteins produced by certain white blood cells, white render harmless foreign substances (antigen). There is no know cause of SLE, but it is thought to be either genetic or associated with hormones. Nine times as many women as men develop the condition. Although sometimes fatal, SLE symptoms can now be relived with corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs.
