Inflamed lymph vessels. Inflamed area (red) on the arm of a patient with lymphangitis (inflamed lymph vessels) caused by an infected insect bite. The lymph vessels carry lymph fluid round the body and are part of the lymphatic system that is also part of the immune system. Inflammation of lymph vessels and nodes (glands) occurs when the system is overwhelmed by an infection. The patient may also have a fever, and there is a danger that the infection may spread to the bloodstream. Treatment is with antibiotics to control the infection, and with anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling.
