Legionnaires' disease. Coloured frontal chest X- ray of the lungs of a patient with Legionnaires' disease (legionellosis). This lung infection (white, centre right) is a severe form of pneumonia. It is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, which is spread by inhalation of contaminated water droplets. Symptoms include chest pain, fever and shortness of breath. The tiny air-sacs (alveloi) in the lungs fill with pus and fluid (exudate), which hinder gas exchange. If left untreated, this infection can prove fatal. Treatment is the use of antibiotics.
