Female leprosy patient in a leprosy house. Leprosy is a neurological disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. The damage to the nerves leads to disfiguring skin lesions. Treatment is with chemotherapy using a combination of three anti-leprosy drugs to prevent the bacteria developing resistance to any one single drug. This leprosy house is part of a research laboratory for immunological chemotherapy. Photographed in 1994, in the Moscow region of Russia.
