Multiple sclerosis. Vertical slice of a human brain showing lesions (purple spots, upper right) caused by multiple sclerosis. This disease erodes the protective sheath that covers nerves fibres in the brain. The brain is affected in patches, caus- ing lesions like those seen here. The cause of the disease is unknown, and there is no cure. Symptoms range from numbness to paralysis and incontinence, and typically strike the victim in sudden bursts, separated by periods of (apparent) dramatic recovery. The severity of multiple sclerosis varies greatly from person to person, with some victims becoming permanently bedridden while others are only mildly affected.
