Meningitis rash. Close-up of the arm of a 6 week old baby girl showing a rash caused by viral meningitis. The rash has given the skin a mottled appearance. Viral meningitis is not as dangerous as the bacterial form, but it is still serious in young people. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis generally causes symptoms no more severe than an attack of influenza, and most cases are left to clear up by themselves. The bacterial form is a medical emergency, and unless it is diagnosed quickly, it may lead to brain damage, or more frequently death.
