Malarial blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dendritic cell (orange) that is surrounded by red blood cells (red) that are infected with the Plasmodium falciparum protozoan. This protozoan causes malaria. A dendritic cell is part of the immune system. It is involved with the antigen response, stimulating the removal of alien or pathogenic material from the body. The protozoa periodically reproduce, causing severe fevers. The disease is spread by bites from infected tropical mosquitoes. Anaemia, kidney failure and a coma can also result from malaria. Magnification unknown.
