Motor neurone disease. Motor neurone disease can cause a decrease in lung capacity, the ventilator assists with breathing. Motor neurone disease is a progressive degeneration of the motor neurones of the brain and spinal cord, along which the brain sends its nerve impulses. It leads to weakening and wastage of muscles. Eventually it is fatal. Motor neurone disease is most common in those aged between 50 and 70, with a slightly higher incidence in men.
