Meningitis. Gross specimen of the brain of a baby showing meningitis, an infection of the tissues lining the brain. The infection is seen as the yellow areas at upper and lower centre. Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical treatment. Symptoms include a stiff neck, aversion to light and a headache. A skin rash may also be present. Treatment is with high doses of intravenous antibiotics.
