Meningitis. Gross specimen of a brain showing meningitis, an infection of the tissues lining the brain. The infection is seen as the creamy areas over the brain, best seen at upper and lower right. Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical treatment. Symptoms include a stiff neck, aversion to light and a headache. A skin rash may also be present. Treatment is with high doses of intravenous antibiotics.
