Caption

Swollen gland due to mumps, affecting a 22-year-old man's upper throat and jaw. The swelling is of the parotid salivary gland, just below and in front of the ear. This is unilateral mumps, where only one of the glands is affected. Mumps is an infection by a paramyxovirus. It was a common childhood disease, but is now prevented with a vaccine. The symptoms in teenagers and adults can be more severe than in children. Treatment is of the pain, and rest to allow the disease to run its course.
