Port-wine stain. This birthmark (or cutaneous naevus) present above a child's lip, is a type of haemangioma. Port-wine stains are large, flat, purple-red marks which are permanent and can be unsightly. Naevi occur as birthmarks and in different forms: moles are one type; strawberry naevi (composed of groups of blood vessels) usually disappear as the child grows older. Port- wine stains do not recede, although removal in some cases is now possible using laser techniques.
