Mole. Large pigmented naevus or mole on a 15 year old boy. These skin marks are caused by an abnormality or overactivity of the melanocytes, the skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. Moles vary considerably in size, with the smaller type being more common and prolific. Adults have an average of 15-20 moles. They are unusual at birth and tend to appear in childhood and adolescence.
