Mole on a woman's skin. A mole (pigmented naevus) is a benign skin growth that forms due to an abnormality or overactivity of melanocytes, skin cells that produce the brown pigment melanin. Most moles develop during childhood and young adulthood. In rare cases a mole may suddenly grow, bleed or become lumpy, and may turn cancerous. In such cases the mole should be removed.
