Osteoporosis: false-colour dual photon densitometry scan of part of the spine of a woman suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bone disease). The colour-coding shows the variation in bone mineral density, from red & yellow (most dense) to green (least dense). The mean value in this case was 0.571 gcm-2; bone is considered to be osteoporotic below 0.8 gcm-2. Osteoporosis describes a reduction in bone density, resulting in an increase in brittleness and a greater risk of fractures, particularly of the vertebrae & the head of the femur. Its higher incidence in women is attributed to a decline in hormone production following the menopause.
