Osteomyelitis. Coloured X-ray of the lower femur (thicker bone top) affected by osteomyelitis. The infected area is visible at centre right as a rounded shadow. Osteomyelitis affects any bone in the body and is more common in children. The infecting microorganism, usually the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, is carried to the bone in the bloodstream, having entered via a skin wound or as a result of an infection somewhere else in the body. The infected bone becomes inflamed and pus forms causing fever amd severe pain. Treatment is with high doses of antibiotics over several weeks or months. The tibia is at bottom.
