Obesity. Front view of an obese woman. A person is considered obese if their body weight is at least 20% more than the maximum desi- rable amount for their particular height. About a third of the UK adult population is overweight, but only 5% are obese. The cause of obesity is not always clear: some people simply eat too much while others become obese due to genetic factors, low metabolic rate or physical inactivity. The condition increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, and aggravates osteoarthritis. Treatment includes dieting, exer- cising, and - in rare cases - radical procedures like wiring the jaws or stapling the stomach.
