Swollen ankle of a 70 year old man caused by oedema due to congenital heart failure. Oedema is the accumulation of fluid in body tissues. Heart failure leads to congestion of blood in the veins, which forces fluid out of the veins and into the surrounding tissues. Treatment of oedema is aimed at the underlying cause.
