Bone infection. Coloured X-ray of a child's upper arm bone (humerus) affected by osteomyelitis. The condition has caused channels to form where the bone has been destroyed (upper left). Osteomyelitis occurs when bone becomes infected by bacteria or other micro-organisms. In children, it tends to affect regions of growing bone. In adults, it is most often a complication of another condition. Osteomyelitis causes destruction of bone tissue by blocking blood vessels. It can also cause fever, pain and fatigue. The infection may spread to cause skin abscesses. It is treated with antibiotics and surgical removal of affected tissue.
