Osteoporosis. Artwork illustrating osteoporosis (brittle bone disease). Osteoporosis is a condition where bone mass becomes reduced, leaving bones porous and more likely to fracture. The three panels at centre show the progression of bone from healthy (at left), to porous (centre), to severely affected (right). The effect on bone strength is shown metaphorically by the Roman columns. Osteoporosis is a common condition in the elderly, and is four times more common in women than in men. It can be prevented by an adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D (calciferol), and regular exercise. Several drugs can slow or stop bone loss.
