Osteoporosis of the spine. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the twisted lumbar vertebrae of a woman with osteoporosis. The disease is characterised by loss of bone density and deterioration of bone tissue. The damaged vertebrae have become compressed, distorting the shape of the spine. Osteoporosis mainly affects post-menopausal women. Risk factors include a family history of the disease, smoking, heavy drinking, lack of oestrogen in women, and lack of testosterone in men. A diet rich in calcium and regular weight bearing exercise can help prevent osteoporosis.
