Caption

Oedema and cellulitis, causing swelling and lesions (yellow) on a 92-year-old woman's foot and lower leg. Oedema is the accumulation of fluid in a tissue, usually due to inadequate drainage or a blockage. Cellulitis is inflammation of the connective tissues of the skin, usually due to a bacterial infection. Severe oedema, as here, can be extremely painful. Treatment is of the underlying cause, in an attempt to get the fluids to drain away naturally.
